Stock Groups create the main hierarchy for inventory, while Stock Categories can provide an additional classification across groups. Good master design makes inventory reports easier to understand and maintain.

Use Stock Groups for

• Product families
• Brands or major item classes
• Logical reporting hierarchy

Use Stock Categories for

A second classification dimension when items from different groups need to be analysed together.

Avoid over-classification

Create only classifications that answer a real reporting or operational question. Extra layers increase maintenance without necessarily improving decisions.
