Common Tally Import Problems
Understand why Tally imports fail or produce exceptions and how businesses can reduce issues before importing large volumes of data.
Common causes of import exceptions
- Required ledger, stock item, unit or group does not exist
- Dates, numbers or tax values are not in the expected form
- Names in Excel do not match the corresponding Tally masters
- Mandatory fields are blank
- Bill-wise, inventory or GST-related settings do not match the incoming data
- The same transaction is imported more than once
Why a small test import is useful
Before importing a large workbook, a small representative sample can expose mapping and master problems without creating a large cleanup exercise. Once the sample behaves correctly, the same rules can be applied to the full data set.
Do not treat every error as a file-format problem
An Excel sheet can be technically valid but still fail because the underlying business data conflicts with the configuration in TallyPrime. The import should be checked from both perspectives: file structure and accounting/master setup.
When controlled import tooling helps
For recurring imports, a utility that validates records before posting, records errors clearly and tracks what has already been imported can reduce operational risk compared with repeatedly correcting data after it reaches Tally.
ASAPTech can help evaluate the requirement and suggest the most suitable TallyPrime, TDL, integration or infrastructure approach without overcomplicating the workflow.
